The Arab League About two weeks ago, Assad promised the Arab League he would stop the slaughter in Syria. He didn't stand by his promise, which led the Arab League to suspend Syria's membership. Assad then demanded an emergency meeting, wanting to reverse this decision. But the Arab League needed the agreement of 14 countries to let this meeting take place ; but Assad's security forces attacked some embassies, pissing these countries off. Some of them, like France and Germany, already wihdrew their ambassadors [Finally !!! We have asked for this for so long !]. The problem is that almost none of the Arab countries wants to recognize the Syrian National Council, pretending it's too early. Don't they want to give the SNC a chance to show what it's capable of ? Arab League After the Arab League had given 3 more days to Syria to stop the violence, Syria announced to the Arab League the government would let observers in (a 500-member mission), under 18 conditions. These conditions include : the observers must be government officials ; the observers can't get in touch with syrian people ; the observers can't go into hospitals ; the observers can't go into prisons ; each of the observers must send a CV to Syria ; Syria can deny access to any observer ; ... And so on. The Arab League refused the conditions. Syria's situation will be discussed during UNO's General Assembly on Tuesday.
