The Arab League

About two weeks ago, Assad promised the Arab League he would stop the slaughter in Syria. He didn't stand by his promise, which led the Arab League to suspend Syria's membership. Assad then demanded an emergency meeting, wanting to reverse this decision. But the Arab League needed the agreement of 14 countries to let this meeting take place ; but Assad's security forces attacked some embassies, pissing these countries off. Some of them, like France and Germany, already wihdrew their ambassadors [Finally !!! We have asked for this for so long !].

The problem is that almost none of the Arab countries wants to recognize the Syrian National Council, pretending it's too early. Don't they want to give the SNC a chance to show what it's capable of ? Let's add to this that China and Russia didn't change their mind concerning the Security Council suggestion to sanction Syria...

When journalist Ignace Leverrier was asked what Assad could do to calm things down with the Arab League, he said he  probably should change his soldiers and tanks into policemen and policecars. And what is happening in Syria lately ? The tanks are being painted in blue and the soldiers' uniforms are being changed !

Annan plan Here is Annan's six-point-plan, if you've not seen it : 1. Syrian-led political process to address the aspirations and concerns of the Syrian people 2. UN-supervised cessation of armed violence in all its forms by all parties to protect civilians 3. All parties to ensure provision of humanitarian assistance to all areas affected by the fighting, and implement a daily two-hour humanitarian pause 4. Authorities to intensify the pace and scale of release of arbitrarily detained persons 5. Authorities to ensure freedom of movement throughout the country for journalists 6. Authorities to respect freedom of association and the right to demonstrate peacefully I don't know about you, but I don't think Assad will follow any of them, even though he agreed to (and even though that would make him look like the good guy in front of the International Community).
